Red Tower
Red Tower

The symbol of Alanya, Kızılkule (Red Tower) was built in the 13th century by the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I to protect the port, shipyard and Alanya Castle against attacks from the sea. The tower, which is the work of the master Ebu Ali Reha el Kettani from Aleppo, is one of the unique examples of medieval Mediterranean defensive structures.

The tower, which draws attention with its octagonal plan, reaches a height of 33 meters in the east, while it is shorter in the west due to the structure of the sloping land. A solid and aesthetic appearance was created by using red bricks and regularly cut limestone stones on its exterior. The inscription on the northern wall of Kızılkule, indicating that it was built in 1226, is an important document for history enthusiasts.

The tower, designed for defensive purposes, has a total of 56 loophole windows, 22 openings for pouring hot pitch and water on the enemy and 6 gargoyles. It has five floors: ground floor, first floor, mezzanine, open floor and terrace. The narrow entrance door and narrow corridors were specially planned for military security. ,

The ground floor of the tower is used as the Ethnography Museum today, while a large water cistern and original ventilation shafts welcome visitors on the first floor. Magnificent panoramic views of Alanya and the Mediterranean can be seen from the terrace floor.

The Red Tower, which has attracted attention with both its magnificence and strategic importance throughout history, is a historical stop that everyone who comes to Alanya must see. It offers a unique visiting experience with both its architecture and its location integrated with the sea.
